I'm not to familiar with MyBB plugins. I was going to mention a points/credits type system, but looks like its been mentioned.
It's hard for third party developers to make a decent amount of income off if selling premium plugins and themes for a product that is free. You go to places like IPB, and XenForo, you have a better chance to make a sale, as the user base is quite different.
Think of the "Apple tax" if you will

Then theres those that choose to go the free forum software route so they can use that money towards the premium plugins and themes.
